Perry was born on July 25, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in each of the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. Her parents, however, were not keen to let her take on acting roles until she was an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry was shy in high-school and did not act. Her first acting experience was in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends when she moved to the university from Boston University. Perry began her career as an actress in New York after graduation, landing minor roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry come back to California and find work as an actress in the theater. She and her mother starred on Broadway together as part of The Other Place, in 2013. The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie together with her in 2015. Perry appeared in 9 episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. Perry played a prominent role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal, starring her dad. The same year, she appeared as a younger character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother in a younger version. Despite the fact that she has a connection with her family to the character she received the part through an audition.
